A. Cork is an environmentally friendly, sustainable choice for flooring. Cork trees are harvested for the their bark alone, and the flooring is made from waste material left over from cork wine bottle stopper production.

Q. I have allergies – is cork a good choice??

A. Cork is a great choice for allergy suffers. It naturally resists mold and mildew and is antistatic so it doesn’t attract or hold dust and pollen particles. Cork also naturally resists fire and contains suberin, a naturally occurring substance that repels bugs, mold, mites and termites.

A. Cork can be installed in kitchens and powder rooms, however, we don’t recommend it in full bathrooms with tubs or showers because high moisture levels can negatively affect the floor.

Q. Do I need to seal my cork floor once it is installed?
A. In most rooms, prefinished cork floors don’t need the extra step of sealing the joints. For kitchen and powder room installations we recommend taking the trouble to seal the joints to provide extra protection from moisture. This is done by lightly screening (sanding with a very fine grit paper), dusting and applying a water-based sealer. Always refer to the manufactures specific instructions.

Q. What is the difference between a wax, oil and polyurethane finish?
A. Polyurethane finishes are very durable and easy to maintain. While resistant to abrasion they may need to be refinished every several years depending on traffic wear. Wax and oil finishes are also very durable but require more regular maintenance. However, wax and oil do offer some advantages: they emphasize the natural cork texture and make fixing minor repairs easy, making wax and oil finishes suitable for higher traffic areas.
